Here are the photographs given to us by the team at Boneshaker magazine. These were to be used for the Article: Rickshaw Riders. From these images i made notes of the moods and emotions they prevoked in me and began thinking of ways to represent those emotions. Also the content for the article body copy was given and so i read through this to gain an insight into how to execute the final article capturing the essence of the atmosphere.

I began to look into the Hindi typeface, the visual charteristics of it and also looked into indian symbolism and culture. From here i then began to design the appropriate visual elements of the article as a whole.

My first thought was to trace the riders faces.

After reading the article content that was provided my mission was to capture the atmosphere and hard labour of the riders and project the emotional state of tiredness coupled with an overall representation of their character

FONTS
The main body copy should be set in
Adobe Garamond Pro at 9 pt (line height
should not go below 11 pt).
Helvetica Neue Bold, Gotham Bold and
Trade Gothic Condensed Bold No.20 are all
firm favorites for for headings, however read
through the articles, review imagery and look
at related websites to get ideas for fonts and
styles for the articles.
FORMAT
Single page 170 mm x 240 mm
Double Page spread 340 mm x 240 mm
(Set up with 3 mm bleed all round)

MARGINS
Set up with at least 10 mm on Top, Bottom and
Outside edge, and at least 15 mm Inside (the
extra 5mm allows for the pinch of the binding,
to make the margin seem even).
If you wish to have larger margins, this is fine,
just add the same amount to the Inside margin.
COLUMNS
As the publication is smaller than A4 (closer to
A5), pages tend to work best with two columns,
as a three column layout can end with very
short lines of text (only 5-6 words). Feel free to
try different approaches, however I have found
2 column to work in most cases.
HANDOVER
Articles to be supplied as Indesign CS5
(or compatible) packaged files, including
all fonts and images. All images should be
CMYK, 300dpi at actual size or larger.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD DESIGNS

Once i read the article instead of capturing the emotions i wanted to apply a bold article using the colour red as my focal point.

I used red to breakup the heavy flowing of body copy and then i chose to use grey to enhance the pull quotes adding  further depth.Body copy : i chose the typeface Adobe Garamond Pro as the visual characteristics reflected something of an organic nature which in turn blends nicely with the title of redwood orphans. Redwood being the specie of tree.

FRONT COVER DESIGNS

VECTOR BASED

My submitted Boneshaker Cover design.

Here i have created a chain link and then filled the who space with them using a gradient overlay filter consisting of the colour of bike oil. The spherical outers of each link pin is embossed to create a textured sensory stimulation.

This design i felt was gender neutral regarding target audience and with the correct lighting on the shelf in store, this would catch the eyes of the viewers.

In response to a video i watched. A man cycled through a city and tracked his route using his GPS and his route was recorded and marked down. He created the shape of a bike. I thought this was a very impactful creative idea drawing attention to both cycling and GPS software. This is my response to my inspiration.

Additional Bonus Cover 2

This cover is one of a mischievous approach. Rattling the cage of professionalism yet actually emitting a treu reality of the  nature of cycling. The colour green first of all signifying a certain herb commonly used in society. I have met many bike riders who take part in 'the herb', and so i combined the usage of this amongst cyclers of the real world and gave the magazine cover a '2in1' function. Each serrated section can be teared off an used as a 'roach' for their 'torches of freedom'. I submitted this in my work based on curiosity of reaction from both Boneshaker and my tutor. The green colouring is done using Hemp Ink.
